Tony Somma's maritime experience began at an early age with his father, Jack, a Hard Hat Diver who loved the water and boats. Tony was encouraged to learn about vessel design, construction, operation and maintenance under the watchful eye of his father.

Tony has owned, operated and maintained numerous vessels. In the early 1990’s Tony modified a 25’ Cabin Cruiser into a 30 knot Sport Fisherman that he used to start a charter fishing business.  As a charter captain, Tony was often called on to check out vessels that friends and customers were purchasing.  In 1998 while having his vessel surveyed for insurance Tony observed the surveyor in action and discussed what standards were employed to conduct a survey and how to document the surveyor’s observations so the report would be acceptable to the Insurance Company. After numerous discussions with the Surveyor, Tony decided to become a surveyor. The rest is history.

In 2000 Tony attended the renowned Chapman School of Seamanship, Marine Surveyor Program where he was instructed by Charles V. Corder Jr. and Mort S. Levin recognized leaders in the field of marine surveying. After graduating in February 2000 Tony was accepted into the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS®) with the designation of Surveyor Associate and also joined ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council) and Boat US's Technical Information Exchange for Marine Professionals and began his career as a full time marine surveyor. In April 2003 Tony sat for and passed the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors Accredited Marine Surveyors Exam and earned the designation Accredited Marine Surveyor (AMS®).

Tony strives to keep current with new developments in the boating industry and actively pursues continuing education to increase his knowledge and upgrade his skills as a marine surveyor. In 2005 Tony successfully completed the criteria and met the requirements the American Boat and Yacht Council established for ABYC Standards Accreditation.
